The Magic Warble Book Review & Giveaway

I love to read. I remember before having my girls all the free time I would have to sit and curl up with a book. My favorite time was during my lunch brake when I was a worker bee. I'd chill in the hospital cafeteria with my yummy lunch and dive into my book. It was my quite time away from all the stress and commotion. I could literally tune out the world around me, it was great.

Since having kids I have traded in my novels for bedtime stories and nursery rhymes. I do not normally write reviews for books because I know my time is limited. However there are exceptions to the rules where I can have the great thrill of a novel but be able to read it to my girls and involve them at the same time.

The Magic Warble by Victoria Simcox is a wonderful book for any age. It satisfies the adventure and suspense I like in a book, yet is clean and fun for the little ones. It has everything you want for a fantasy and enchanting book. Fairies, dwarfs, talking animals and what story would not be complete without an evil queen.

"Twelve-year-old Kristina Kingsly feels like the most unpopular girl in her school. The kids all tease her, and she never seems to fit in. But when Kristina receives an unusual Christmas gift, she suddenly finds herself magically transported to the land of Bernovem, home of dwarfs, gnomes, fairies, talking animals, and the evil Queen Sentiz."

"In Bernovem, Kristina not only fits in, she’s honored as “the chosen one” the only one who can release the land from Queen Sentiz’s control. But it’s not as simple as it seems. To save Bernovem, she must place the gift she was given, the famous “Magic Warble” in its final resting place. And she must travel through the deep forest, climb a treacherous mountain, and risk capture by the queen’s “zelbocks” before she reaches her destination. Guided by her new fairy friends, Clover and Looper and by Prince Werrien, a teenage boy, as well as an assortment of other characters, Kristina sets off on a perilous journey that not only tests her strength but her heart."

I very much enjoyed the main character Kristina. She is an odd little girl but with great strength and character others may not see. In the first few pages I could relate to her quirkiness and especially to having a pet rat named Raymond. When I was around Kristina's age I too had a pet rat name was Spunky and she was awesome. however Spunky never got a character in a book like Raymond the real rat did, he was a loving pet to Victoria and her inspiration for the Raymond in the book.

Q & A with author Victoria Simcox

Q ~Can you tell me how you came up with the concept of this book and does it reflect any part of you or your childhood?

A ~ When I was about 12, I read the Narnia books and they were so magical to me.  I wanted so much to go through a wardrobe into a magical land also like Lucy and Susan. I loved especially the first 2 books, The Magician's Nephew and The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. I admire CS Lewis for his children's books as well as his adult theology books, The Great Divorce, Mere Christianity and others. I also really enjoy other stories like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Series of Unfortunate Events.

Q ~ How did you come up the interesting names for the characters?

A ~ The main character Kristina is named after my daughter, who was the same age at the time I was writing it. The name Rumalock came from a funny, little, made up story that my mother used to tell me when I was a child. Clover the fairy princess was named after the plant, Clover. Looper was named after the Looper moth. The rest of the character's names, I made up out of my imagination.

Q ~ What do you like to do when you're not writing?

A ~ When I'm not writing, I'm doing the everyday things like house work and running my children here and there. I also teach elementary school art to 1st through 6th graders, as well as home school my children and manage my two older children's Celtic band, A Well Known Stranger, which I really enjoy.

Q ~ How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

A ~ The Magic Warble is my first book, and so it is also my favorite. I am about 80% finished the 2nd book in the series and I'm planning on 3 or 4 books in this series.

In fact Victoria's second book is due out sometime early next year. I am very intrigued to find out more about that one.Truly if you are in the market for a book you can sit and relax with on your time or cuddle with the kids and read aloud this is the book for you.

Very neat! I am an avid reader but haven't yet started exploring new children's literature with my kids yet. But this sounds like it'd be a great way to start! :)

I would like this book to read to my daughter. She marches to her own tune and loves to hear and read stories about quirky characters who can do things and make a difference.
