I went through my veggie drawer and decided I wanted to do carrots with my cucumbers...I really wished I had avocado to throw in there..but nope. So I made the sushi rice..and boy was it sticky..lol I then made my rolls and when I tried to cut them...crap....disaster. My knife was not sharp enough and just ripped through my Nori and stuck to everything. Plus I wanted to keep my veggies chunky, yah not a good idea, should have made the slices thinner and just added more. Oh well, it was tasty....
I had a lot of left over rice and have seen some of the bento blogs I follow doing adorable Onigiri with little faces and stuff..well I was not that ambitious yesterday, but I did want to try it. I didn't have much to stuff the rice balls with...then I remembered the sausage in my freezer. I thought that would be yummy....the salty sausage to go with the slightly sweet rice...and it was!
I am always excited to try a new culinary treat so this was awesome. Now I did something else with the left over rice...kind of stumbled upon it by accident (and so glad I did)...but I can not share it with you until later for the C Bento post so come on back :)

my best friend's grandmother would make us all kinds of sushi like food without using fish.... it's really surprising how many different food works well with seed weed and sushi rice!
Is there anything you can't do? You are so talented! How did you make those cool little shapes? Are the flowers made of cheese or...?
Kali really wants to make sushi. Maybe we will try these ideas out first.
Wait a minute. Aren't I the Japanese one? LOL You make more sushi/onigiri than I do! You're doing great! Love all the pictures and posts! :)
Sharon - LOL, yes my BFF and you make a wicked Spam Musubi..I'm thinking of trying that next however it will probably be just me eating it..lol
Single Mom ISO - I found a bunch of veggie cutters at the Japaneses dollar store here in town, however you can find them everywhere online..even amazon! They come in different flower shapes, you can use them for veggies, fruit, bread..whatever :)
Nikki - Rice is such a universal ingredient, I can not think of anything that Doesn't go with it..lol
Beautiful, beautiful lunch! Love it!
I wouldn't mind trying to make some vegetarian sushi if I could figure out how - which given my culinary track record, may not be a good thing...
Such pretty lunches! Very colorful and eye-catching!
I have to tell you, I have looooads of kids plates. And when I saw these ones at Target I wanted them so much, but tried to be good and resist. But now everytime I see them in photos I kick myself all over again! They are just so cute. Cupcakes?! And I didn't get them? Gah! What was I thinking?!! :P
